Three sponsors shared the cost of resurfacing a worn-out 400m track. Six months later, Kannur hosted its first district athletics meet in four years.
The Challenge
The 400m synthetic track had cracked and lifted in several lanes after years of monsoons, and the drainage beneath it had failed. Athletes were training on the road outside, and the district had stopped hosting meets.
What Was Done
The resurfacing was split into four priced items on KALARI. A charitable foundation took the track surface, a local business took the drainage, and an alumni association funded the lane markings and starting blocks. Work began only after engineering sanction and was inspected at each stage.
“For years our athletes trained on a surface that hurt them. Now they train on a track they are proud of — and the whole town comes to watch.”
The Result
The track reopened after completion, fitness and safety certificates were issued. It is open to athletes, students and the public every day, and hosted the district athletics meet in its first month.
